Zimbabwe has made concerted efforts to develop its genomics research capacity, building on a strong foundation of educational and health institutions such as the University of Zimbabwe and the Biomedical Research and Training Institute. While HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria remain high-priority public health concerns, noncommunicable diseases are increasingly emerging. In response, government-led initiatives and cross-sector collaborations are driving the integration of genomics into public health strategies.
Scientific and community-focused organizations are playing critical roles in strengthening genomics infrastructure—by improving laboratory facilities, creating local bioinformatics training programs, and fostering partnerships with global research networks. This holistic approach ensures that genomic findings translate into real-world health benefits, especially for populations most vulnerable to infectious and chronic diseases.
