Establish a genome engineering hub in South Africa
We aim to establish a regional center of excellence in South Africa dedicated to advancing genome editing technologies using zebrafish as a model organism. Zebrafish are increasingly recognized for their value in biomedical research due to their genetic similarity to humans, transparent embryos, and rapid development, making them ideal for studying gene function and modeling disease.
This planned facility seeks to provide comprehensive, hands-on training in CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, molecular biology, and zebrafish husbandry to researchers, postgraduate students, and early-career scientists from South Africa and the broader African continent. By creating a platform that combines high-quality infrastructure with expert-led instruction, the initiative aims to build local capacity, support innovative research, and strengthen Africa’s contribution to the global genomics landscape.
Through workshops, mentorship, and collaborative opportunities, the facility will foster a new generation of scientists equipped with the skills and tools to lead in the field of functional genomics and precision medicine.
